The first league to develop a dedicated voice application.
The NHL Multi-Modal Alexa App set a precedent as the first voice application launched by a major professional sports league, delivering real-time news, scores, stats, standings, and more across Alexa-enabled devices.
Following Amazon's "VUX" (Voice UX) guidelines, I developed comprehensive user interaction flows. This included anticipating user queries, mapping variations, and designing Alexa's responses to ensure a smooth conversational experience. I also incorporated fun and engaging Easter eggs, such as programming Alexa to respond to “How many Washington Capitals speak Russian?” by returning a video of Alex Ovechkin speaking in Russian, adding a delightful surprise for fans.
For devices with screens, the app integrated dynamic visual content such as team logos, player images, and broadcast information. I produced assets to harmonize the voice and visual experiences, refining both for maximum impact.
By launching this app, the NHL became the first major North American professional sports league to offer detailed player profiles and real-time game updates through Alexa-enabled devices. This pioneering move not only differentiates the NHL from other sports organizations but also positioned it at the forefront of digital innovation in sports entertainment. Sports Business Journal
